Passing by Sunset Beach Island Wednesday in our boat was so very exciting for me. From the goats, to the houses on the ICW to the houses from one end of the island to the other end- the same old thrill returned. Except for the absence of the pontoon bridge- now replaced with a 65' bridge we recognized so many familiar landmarks! We were so very lucky for 16 years getting to have two wonderful weeks at Sunset Beach with my parents every June thanks to my Aunt Virginia and Bill! There were so many memories made there with our family and then with the friends that Travis would bring along. On Thursday we rented a car and decided to revisit all our favorite places from our yearly vacations in Sunset Beach.
When we drove onto Sunset Beach everything looked the same- yet very different. The last time we were there there were still some empty lots- not any more! Houses have also been built closer to the ICW. Our favorite house at 405 5th Street looked the same just a different color. I got so excited when we turned on to the street as I thought there was a For Sale sign in front- but it was the house to the right. We laughed as we recalled that the same house was for sale the last time we were there! So many wonderful memories!
We called Ben from Calabash and wanted to know if he wanted anything from Callahan's our favorite shopping place! We certainly bought our share of hermit crabs, Christmas ornaments and beach toys from their store. What a thrill to revisit! We picked up a few things- but due to limited space on a boat we did more looking around than buying!
From Calabash, we headed back to Southport and drove all around the area. The waterfront was just a special as I remembered. We had a wonderful late lunch before heading back to Saint James Plantation.
Friday was THE day that we would tour their development. I just knew that Dave would fall in love with the area as much as I had so many years ago. We had a wonderful agent who I had talked to over the last several years. He showed us beautiful homes, land and the outstanding area known as Saint James Plantation. But guess what, those "loving feelings" just weren't there any more. I had built the area up so much in my mind- it was really quite the let-down that this was just not going to be the place for us. Solomons was looking better and better- close to PA and all our wonderful friends in Calvert County and the Tyrone area. Now.... if I could only convince Dave to sell our house and buy a condominium with a boat slip in Solomons! As we had dinner and a wonderful glass of wine and reflected on our day of touring, I finally felt a real sense of peace and contentment!
Three wonderful days revisiting memories, making future plans and appreciating everything we have just priceless!

405 5th Street- 16 years of wonderful times. Thanks Aunt Virginia and Bill!
Calabash head boat docks. We have pictures of Travis and Ben in front of the fish.

Wonder if the husband lost a bet or something?
Goats on Bird Island just south of Sunset Beach
Pontoon Bridge no more. Sunset Beach high rise bridge. The old bridge is on display near the bridge.

Of course we had to stop in at Callahan's

Probably the last Nuke on the Fryedaze nuclear plant tour. This is the Brunswick off gas stack. 14 nuke sites and 24 reactors.
Fort Fisher Ferry
The Love invasion arrived at Fryedaze while we were in Wrightsville Beach. We had a great time catching up with Muffin and Tim and touring their soon to be new house.
