Youngs Point, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Orillia

We have had thrilling.... but exhausting three days of cruising. We are nearing the end of our time on the Trent-Severn Waterway Canal System and Dave and I are glad to be through all the locks! We have gone through approximately 40 locks on this system and I honestly don't remember how many on the Erie! We are ready for some wide open cruising!
From Peterborough we went to Bobcaygen and then on to Fenelon Falls the busiest lock on the canal. We were fortunate that our friends on Sno Daz made room for us on the wall as we had a front seat view of the madness that went on Friday and Saturday in Fenelon Falls. There are boats that are going through the locks that require the lock-tenders to walk them into the locks and get them straight. Some went cross-wise in the lock and they had to tell them which direction to turn the wheel. It was pure entertainment at the "zoo."
Today we left and went through 7 locks and 47.7 miles in 9 hours and we are exhausted! The Kirkfield Lift Lock was like the Peterborough Lift Lock except this one had no barriers in front and you felt like you were in an infinity pool. Luckily we did not pull all the way to the front of the lock pan. We also started through the Canadian Shield which is a canal cut through granite. It is so narrow you have to do a security call before entering as no two boats can pass side by side. Needless to say we didn't do a lot of talking through those two areas!
Today we are in Orillia- which is directly south of Toronto. It was a crazy day in the Narrow Channel which leads to Orillia. Boats and crazy drivers everywhere! Tomorrow we will travel to the Big Chute which will portage us across the road and put us back into the water on the other side. So excited to experience this as we have read about this for years! We will get fuel and pump out in Port Severn and then head into the Georgian Bay. We cannot wait as we have heard about this part of the Loop for a long time! Hopefully we won't be too far into the Bay before we get Wi-Fi!

No more hydraulic locks passed Fenelon Falls- the gates and the water are done by hand!

Saw this beautiful Monk coming out of Peterborough. It is the exact same boat as ours- now I want a blue bottom!

Two more shots of the Peterborough Lift Lock that we found so impressive!

One of the many kinds of houseboats we see along the way. Some were really "dives" while others like this one were really well maintained!

Many of the structures up here are actually built right on top of the granite that is in the water.

Saw this beautiful church out on an island on our way to Fenelon Falls

Interesting glass house

One of the shorter locks went went through- notice what looks like faces of Native Americans in the granite

Touring Fenelon Falls

This dude wanted to visit his friends so he just pulled his four-wheeler right onto the side walk.

Fenelon Falls. In travel guide compared it to Niagra Falls- not quite but really pretty

This is what the stone ledge looked like the entire way through Trent Cut today. No margin of error for Captain Dave
This was how narrow the canal was
Kirkfield Lift Lock- thankfully we were not at the front of the pan looking down 47 feet

Thanks for reading- miss you all!

  1. Hello... We waved to you from your slip in Port of Orillia last evening (Had to check out your blog)! Big Chute, can't count how many times we've traversed and it always amazes us! We passed 'Pearl' on Saturday in the narrows.... Rawley Resort just before the last lock into G Bay is fabulous... You will love the Bay, If you can make a stop at Henry's, the amount of protected anchorages are simply beautiful... Sportsman Inn in Killarny is a great stop (They have a drive in movie for the boats at the slips. One of our favorite places is Tobermory, not sure you will be crossing the Bay, you drive over ship wrecks from the 1800's, it really is fabulous!!
Your blog is amazing... Looking forward to reading the rest of your journey!

Wishing you calm seas & safe travels...

  2. Thanks Marilyn, several of your suggestions are on our list. Tobermory may be a stretch with our time limits in this beautiful area.
