We were a little rushed trying to get to Michigan City so we could head for Tyrone to make Bens birthday and Betsy's reunion.. The weather delays ate up the time we had to get to Michigan City. We were lucky and had a good day to make the run from Saint Joseph to Michigan City. The Michigan City Harbor was a secure place to leave the boat for 8 days. Its a municipal marina with locked gates and 24/7 security. The down side was that we parked the boat in a slip under big trees and a coal plant was next door. When we got back the boat was a mess and my motto is "run she might, shine she must".
We had a good time at home spending time with Ben and the grand puppy Titan. Getting to see family made the trip all worth while. The reunion was a hit and everyone got to catch up with old friends.
We left Michigan City with the threat of thunderstorms and 10-15 knot winds. The winds were out of the south and the ride to Chicago wasn't too bad. As you can see in some of the pictures below we didn't see the skyline until we got close. It was foggy and hazy.
Chicago has been a blast! We did a lot of walking around, took a double decker bus tour in which we could get on and off when we wanted so we toured the sites and parks. Today we took the architectural river tour by boat. The tour guide was amazing. He never stopped talking for 75 minutes. The history of Chicago and its buildings is fascinating. Betsy loves the big city, me not so much. A few days here and in New York were plenty for me.
Tomorrow we depart at around 0830 to go through downtown Chicago. We want to be past the tour boats before they start at 1000. We will go under around 40 bridges in 5 miles. We dropped the mast yesterday due to its 22 foot height. The lowest bridge has 17 feet of clearance. We are 16.5 feet (we hope). It should be and interesting day ahead.
| Fryedaze "slappin leather" between St Joseph and Michigan City. I always wondered what the boat looked like at full throttle. Island Office came along side and took a few shots while we were at 15.2 mph. The bow comes up when the stern squats into the water. You can surf on our big wake. |
Island Office passing Fryedaze at 17 mph. On her was to Michigan City
Leaving Saint Joseph
Just another nuke plant along the way, DC Cook.
Michigan City light
Black gold, Texas tea! We got lucky and had a oil recycling area in the Michigan City marina. Just in time for the 250 hour oil change.
This little gem makes oil changes a piece of cake. It take almost four gallons of oil for each engine.
Hazy Chicago sky line. It was foggy when we came in to DuSable Harbor. Note the black dot in the picture. That is from taking a sunset picture and burning the camera. We hit the Best Buy in downtown Chicago and picked up a replacement.
The "Bean", Its real name is Cloud Gate but the folks in Chicago call it The Bean
Happy Tourists
Top of John Hancock building.
Double decker tour through the canyons of Chicago.
Lady GaGa lives here. OK I don't care either :-)
This was at Bubba Gumps when we had lunch. Soooo true.
Betsy at Navy Pier
Pearl and Melinda B heading out the day before us.
